Save the High Street Post Office!

High St Post Office

A permanent post master has come along who wants to take over the post office business that is currently operating out of 'the post office' - a dedicated building where post office vans can pull up outside and pick up the packages and parcels posted there that day. The person taking over the franchise wants to move the post office to inside Bushel's bakery on Tennyson Road i.e. buy your cake and post a parcel at the same time??

This will take business away from our High Street (and will also present a problem for any resident or business using the current post office for their banking). Why now? you might ask - indeed 'why now'. While the post office has been run by temporary postmasters and mistresses for a few years now there was no indication that the Post Office were looking for a permanent person in post and one of the arguments we could/should make is that there was no competition or advert for anyone who might want to keep the Post Office where it is.

Given the recent scandal around the Post Office, its IT system and its persecution of former postmasters and mistresses who were made to take the blame for its own faulty IT software it seems particularly crass for the management of the Post Office to move our facility now, given the fact that many ex-post masters and mistresses are still waiting for compensation.

The MEC held an 'extraordinary general meeting' where different points and objections were raised - you can read these here
